Risk assessments for non-standard work

Don't forget that all work must be risk-assessed and suitable safety measures developed or adapted.

A company was recently convicted for not having made such arrangements when two men suffered broken legs as a result of an item being struck by a fork-lift, whilst engaged in some ad-hoc non-standard work.

The good news is that one of the workers was almost certainly saved from death by his safety helmet, which split as a result of the impact by the falling article.

The men were off work for a substantial length of time and whilst no mention is made of potential claims for damages, the company was fined £13,000 with over £11,000 costs awarded against them. And of course the officially recorded issue will almost certainly have an adverse effect on other areas of their business profile.
